Sydenham’s Halloween Extravaganza 2018

(Who let the dogs out?)

From the Greyhound way down to the Poodle Club, Sydenham High Street was once again heaving with ghouls and ghosties and all manner of beasties this Halloween. Whilst the phantoms rocked to the live music of Afrige, a fabulous local singer the annual costume competition was taking place at the Sydenham Centre. Hearts were stolen by Mochi (aka Spider Dog) who won the best-dressed pet costume to claim the £25 voucher from Whites Pet Centre. The winners of the most original costume were Christian Hayes, Purdy and Irving Milner Hayes, and Mala Shahi for their highly original homemade puppet master and puppets costumes. The funniest costume went to Alfredo Ruaro-Lane for his inflatable Frankenstein outfit. Whilst the scariest costume winner was Ruben for his terrifying clown and chainsaw ensemble.

With a crowd close to 800, this year saw the biggest ever Sydenham Halloween event and with the addition of the Halloween Social at the Greyhound the entertainment on hand was truly awesome. Fright night was well under way as Karen and Daren opened their spine chilling Haunted House at the Poodle Club. It terrified even the most shock resistant adults when the zombies chased them through the garden and the spooktacular ghouls that greeted the crowds at Whites Pet Centre completed the terror.

Once again a massive thank you for the generosity shown by all the traders taking part, particularly Classic Trophies for the fancy dress competition winner’s amazing medals, and Sainsbury’s Local for donating the prizes. Thanks also to Councillor Chris Best, Deputy Mayor of Lewisham, for hosting the competition and awarding the prizes, Angela Hall, Marion Nisbet, and Kate Mallinder for judging the costumes and all the SEE3 volunteers who helped make this event a true extravaganza.

Heather Mallinder, Event Co-ordinator.
