Louise Green, a final year graphic design student at UCA Epsom, has made a short documentary on Sydenham entitled "Truth and Transition of the High Street".
Louise said "The media regularly tells us that the death of the high street is imminent, our communities are fragmented, and that recovery will be long and uncertain. Perhaps we should question this and ask ourselves what is truly happening and what we have to do ourselves to enrich the high street that is entwined within our community. I chose Sydenham because of its Portas pilot and found the people to be very friendly, with a great community spirit. I really enjoyed making this documentary."
In this short documentary, the local shopkeepers and residents of Sydenham discuss these questions in search for the truth, each with diverse opinions. Why and how is the landscape of the high street changing? What do people believe is currently occurring? What does the future hold?
An accompanying book is available from Sydenham Community Library or copies can be purchased by contacting Louise on firstname.lastname@example.org. She would also like your comments on the documentary, which you can leave directly on YouTube or send by email.
